welcome to the first post of the kbc blog. in all its simplicity, the hope is that the members of our group will contribute in ways to improve the experience as it grows and becomes more popular. We're looking forward interviewing members and help them tell their unique stories of why they do what they do. Let's roll.

Thomas Wintering

Thomas Wintering  started attending KBC earlier this year when he became a sales representative for Smartflower. Thom is originally from Cleveland Ohio and moved here with his wife, Jamie, in 2017.They have a home that Thom describes as "off the grid" and part of the lifestyle is being nearly totally reliant on solar energy to power their home.

He once had a career with AT&T but was fired only two years before retirement which was a big blow especially since he had a wife and three daughters to support and he himself was undergoing some medical issues.

After his dismissal he had his head down on what was once his desk at AT&T, contemplating his future, when he noticed the sign he had displayed which read

"Today is the first day of the rest of your life".

He pondered it for a moment and was then motivated to skip feeling sorry for himself and find something more meaningful other than working for an

"unfeeling, multinational, corporation who didn't care about its people"

In the process, Thom, having a solar powered home, realized he had a working knowledge of solar energy and decided he would help others have their home solar powered also. This lead him to Smartflower which is an innovative and unique way to bring solar energy to one's home or business without installing solar panels on the roof.

The Smartflower fully deployed

It has several advantages:

  • It powers your home without power companies
  • You don't have to own the property so renters can use it
  • It's portable so you can take it with you when you move
  • It follows the sun for maximum efficiency
  • Power is stored in a battery
  • In the event of power outage, the Smartflower and batteries keeps your power on so there's no need to buy an expensive generator
  • Any unused electricity stored in the battery can be sold to the power company
  • Since it isn't installed on the roof, no modifications to your home are necessary
  • When bad weather is approaching, you can retract it to avoid hail or other storm damage, then redeploy it when the danger passes
  • It automatically detects high winds over 30 mph and retracts on its own
  • and...it charges electric vehicles!

Being new in the business, Thom is still growing so he also has a job outside the business. For more information visit
